Organisation    Heliomare rehabilitation center
Target Group

Most clients have a professional background, but can no longer exercise their original profession because of their limitations. Daytime work in a work center is suitable for people who want to work, but can not (yet) perform paid work. People can also go here if you want to discover your talents.

At “Veel in Hout” Heliomare students can gain work skills as a stepping stone to a place in the labor market. In addition to support with the specific work, the clients also receive guidance on social skills, such as collaboration, working through, accuracy, and receiving feedback. With “Veel in Hout” the same rules apply as in business, such as being on time, being customer-friendly, wearing work clothes, and paying attention to your own safety and to that of the other. “Veel in hout” searches for and arranges activities for students and clients to acquire work skills. The work takes place in collaboration with various companies in our network. The network already counts 100 companies and organizations and is constantly expanding. “Veel in Hout” organizes a meeting every year for employers so that they can easily join.

Description

At “Veel in Hout”, people with a physical disability, a non-congenital brain injury, a chronic illness or an intellectual disability work. Our clients work with great enthusiasm and commitment to the products. The work pace is a bit lower and the finish is sometimes a bit less tight but the end product may always be there! The tasks for clients who work in the workshop are adapted to the skills and their possibilities, but are also determined by the product or the assignment. If you can not use one hand properly or if you are dependent on a wheelchair or rollator, you can still cut, mill, paint or assemble with adjustments.

Clients mainly work with scrap wood and plate material. The products are of good quality and are critically examined when it comes to construction and sustainability. Realize, however, that you do not have to deal with a fully automatic carpentry factory. So all products are unique.

In the work center “Veel in Hout” not only furniture is made, but also cupboards, other storage systems and coffins. The first coffins of pallet wood are delivered to a Funeral Center by pupils and clients of this woodworking department. Disabled pupils demolish the pallet timber and then sort it out. All kinds of tasks are divided in the workshop; canteen, social media and administrative work and working with wood. The coffins can be painted or decorated according to everyone's wishes. The coffins are lined on the inside with natural cotton and have a matching pillow. The cotton is nailed with tough copper head nails.

A unique collaboration between Heliomare and the Hartenkamp group (1 July 2017), the "Veel in Hout" work center has been set up.

The supervisors are trained in working with wood and advise and support the clients in the manufacture of the products. An intensive collaboration between client and supervisor ensures an optimally finished end product. Depending on the possibilities and interests of clients and clients, we involve clients in making (construction) drawings, calculations and other preparatory matters.
